Question: I am facing some mental problems in the matter of Zikr-e-Ilahi being Masnoon or non-Masnoon. An effect of Hazrat Abdullah bin Masoud RA has been narrated that he saw some of his disciples who used to gather at a fixed place for zikr, so he said in anger, "Are you more guided than the Companions of the Messenger of Allah?" In the second tradition, Hazrat Ibn Masoud said that during the time of the Messenger of Allah, I did not see such mention, then why are you people coming up with this new method? On the other hand, there are many hadiths in Mishkah which prove the virtue of collective remembrance. For example, Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is the narrator that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) likened the circles of remembrance to the gardens of Paradise. It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said that no nation sits for the remembrance of Allah, except that angels surround it and shower it with mercy. Similarly, there is a hadith of Bukhari and Muslim that the angels seek out gatherings of divine remembrance and sit in them. In the light of these hadiths, it is not understandable that the Circle of Zikr is an innovation. Please clarify that in the presence of Prophet's sayings, what is the correct explanation of Hazrat Ibn Masoud? Answer: The word Zikr is applied to many things. One of its meanings is to remember or remember Allah in the heart. The other meaning is to mention Allah in every way while standing up, for example saying Alhamdulillah, Masha Allah, Inshallah, Subhan Allah, etc. Asking Allah in various situations, and mentioning Allah's blessings and wisdom and His attributes and His commandments etc. in our conversations. The third meaning is to explain the teachings of the Holy Qur'an and the Divine Law, whether they are in the form of a lesson, or in the form of a conversation, or in the form of a sermon or speech. The fourth meaning is Tasbih, Tahleel and Takbeer. In the hadiths that mention the Prophet's praise for the circles and gatherings of divine remembrance, they refer to the third type of circles. And what Hazrat Abdullah bin Masoud RA has expressed his displeasure about is the fourth type of circle, because during the reign of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, it was not customary to mention Tasbih and Tahleel by making circles, nor did the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, teach it. And neither did the Companions adopt this method. As for the mention of God in the first two senses, it is obvious that it cannot be done by making circles from the end, but it must be an individual mention.
